In What Remains, the male figure emerges from a landscape of fragmented brushstrokes, appearing simultaneously solid and dissolving. The body is rendered with strength and presence, yet its edges blur into layers of colour and texture, suggesting the tension between who we are, who we have been, and what we leave behind.

The figure turns away from the viewer, creating a sense of distance while inviting deeper reflection. Warm rust tones and atmospheric greys move across the surface like traces of memory, carrying echoes of experience, resilience and transformation. The body becomes more than a physical form; it becomes a record of life’s accumulations—moments of connection, loss, growth and self-discovery.

The work challenges conventional ideas of masculinity by embracing complexity rather than certainty. Strength is present, but it is not performed. Instead, it is revealed through endurance, vulnerability and the willingness to carry one’s history openly. The fragmented surface suggests that identity is not a fixed state, but something continually shaped by the experiences that leave their mark upon us.

Part of an ongoing exploration of masculinity, memory and queer identity, What Remains reflects on the traces that shape us long after moments have passed. It is a meditation on resilience, self-acceptance and the enduring beauty found within imperfection.
