Details

Deeply rooted in tradition and craftsmanship, this indigo-dyed textile cushion celebrates one of West Africa’s most recognisable and enduring art forms.

The rich indigo colour is derived entirely from plant sources, using the Indigofera plant and indigo vine. Crushed leaves are dried into small balls and left to ferment before being mixed with an alkaline solution to create the dye. The cloth is repeatedly immersed to build depth of colour, then hand-beaten to help fix the pigment — a time-honoured process that gives each piece its distinctive tonal variation and organic character.

This textile features Adire Oniko, a traditional resist-dye technique most closely associated with the Yoruba people of Nigeria. By tightly binding sections of cotton fabric before dyeing, artisans prevent the dye from penetrating certain areas, creating bold, unmistakable patterns that are both graphic and deeply symbolic. No two pieces are ever identical, making each cushion truly one of a kind.

Designed to be lived with and appreciated over time, this cushion embraces the natural imperfections of hand-dyed textiles. Indigo dyes are not always colourfast, and gentle care is essential — a reminder of its authenticity and handmade nature.

Perfect for layering into relaxed interiors, this piece brings depth, history, and soul to sofas, beds, or reading corners.
