In The Self We Hold, two figures occupy the same space, intertwined yet distinct. One appears as shadow, the other illuminated and softly defined, creating a powerful visual dialogue between concealment and revelation, fear and acceptance, the known self and the self still emerging. Their embrace is neither possessive nor protective; it is an act of recognition.
The work explores the relationship we have with our own identity. The shadow figure represents the aspects of ourselves that remain hidden, suppressed or misunderstood, while the illuminated form embodies authenticity, self-awareness and emotional openness. Together, they suggest that wholeness is not achieved by rejecting parts of ourselves, but by learning to acknowledge and integrate them.
Soft brushwork and atmospheric tones create a dreamlike quality that blurs the boundary between physical reality and psychological experience. The figures become symbolic rather than literal, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship with acceptance, belonging and self-understanding.
Part of an ongoing exploration of masculinity, identity and queer experience, The Self We Hold speaks to the universal process of reconciliation with oneself. It is a meditation on vulnerability, courage and the transformative power of self-acceptance. In embracing every part of who we are, we begin to find freedom, connection and peace.
